Miroslaw Korkowski,
Program Director & Coach
Miroslaw Korkowski
has more then 20 years experience
with both the practical and theoretical aspects of weightlifting and resistance
training. Since receiving his master of physical education degree and
a professional weightlifting coach diploma from the Academy of Physical
Education in Warsaw, Poland, Miroslaw continuously used his system to
train many renowned athletes as well as individuals and groups of all
ages and capabilities.
As a Canadian National Coach for 10 years, Miroslaw has coached Canada
Women's and Men's National Teams at various international events including
World Championships in England, Germany, Poland, and Turkey. He coached
Nancy Niro who won the first World Championships medal for Canada in women's
weightlifting (silver and bronze), and ten time Women's World Championship
participant Theresa Brick (bronze medal).
When leading Manitoba's junior and senior provincial teams, Miroslaw has
run national and provincial team training camps, local seminars, and technical
courses. He initiated club league in weightlifting in Manitoba, and was
actively involved in developing the high performance weightlifting centre
at the University of Manitoba.
As the strength training coach for the University of Manitoba athletic
teams, Provincial Sport Organizations and private clubs, Miroslaw devised
strength and conditioning training programs, assisted coaches in implementation
and monitoring of the program. He actively contributed to the success
of many Manitoba star athletes including Colleen Miller, World Championship
gold medalist in rowing, Olympian wrestler David Hall, and Commonwealth
Games medalist in weightlifting Quinn Nguyen.
Seeing sport development as being fundamentally important, Miroslaw has
been on the provincial weightlifting technical and coaches committees
as well as the Canadian Weightlifting Federation's Technical and National
Coaching Certification Program committees.
Miroslaw's work won continued recognition. In 1986 he was awarded by the
Polish Weightlifting Federation with the "Gold Medal Honor"
for outstanding contribution to the development of sport in Poland. In
1994 Miroslaw was the recipient of the "Coach of the Year" award
in the High Performance category, which recognizes a history of commitment
and dedication to coaching in Manitoba and Canada.
