Weller and Steinhofel both to match Foldi (edited IWF News, 08.08.2004): Hungarian Olympic and World champion Imre Foldi was so far the only weightlifter in the world who has participated in 5 Olympic Games. He started in 1960 Rome, followed by 1964 Tokyo, 1968 Mexico, 1972 Munich and 1976 Montreal. In the Athens Games as many as two German weightlifters also become five-time Olympians. Ingo Steinhofel and Ronny Weller both made their Olympic debut in 1988 and did not fail in Barcelona, Atlanta and in Sydney. In 2000 Weller equaled American Norbert Schemansky's special record, he too become the owner of 4 Olympic medals. Weller did not manage to finish in the top 3 in Athens to become the first weightlifter in the world to win 5 medals in 5 Olympic Games.

CANADIAN NEWS

To Members of the MWA/CWFHC Weightlifting Community (Submitted by Joe Landreville, Manitoba Weightlifting Association)

It is my pleasure to distribute, on behalf of Dr. Roy Sinclair, Ph. D., the Sinclair Coefficients for the Olympiad 2005-2008 in Adobe PDF electronic format. These coefficients are in effect from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2008. Printed copies of these documents were mailed to the IWF, care of Tamas Ajan, in the middle of July of this year.

At this time, Dr. Roy Sinclair has asked that these documents be electronically distributed. It is Dr. Roy Sinclair's hope that you will forward these documents onto the appropriate people within your federation/organization, post it on your website and forward it onto other federations/organizations.

Over the years, there has always been debate over whether a good performance by a smaller man is as good as a good performance from a bigger man. In an attempt to derive the best lifter, various formulas have evolved. The purpose of the Sinclair formula is to determine the best athlete regardless of bodyweight. Rewards of excellence for individual achievement can thus be based on exact bodyweight. The Sinclair coefficients are derived statistically and are based on the World Records Totals in the various bodyweight categories as of December 31 of the previous several years. The Sinclair coefficient for an athlete with a bodyweight of xkg. is the ratio of the World Record Total of the heaviest athlete, averaged over time, to the World Record Total of athletes with bodyweights of xkg. averaged over time. The statistical approach tends to average out the influence of exceptionally high, or low, results.

Dr. Roy Sinclair's formula has been in use in Canada for more than 24 years and is used to select best lifters at competitions and team composition both provincially and nationally.

Please feel free to distribute these documents. See the links below.

A special note of thanks goes out to Marc Poretti (working in conjunction with Dr. Sinclair) of Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA for providing these coefficients for distribution.

To access the 2005 Sinclair Coefficients go to Ontario Weightlifting Association web site.

Submited by Susanne Dandenault/ Team Canada and Richard Mason/ Manitoba Master - both representing the Brick Gym Weightliftig Club: the wedding took place on October 9th at the Kingswood Golf & Country Club in LaSalle, MB. There were over 180 people in attendance on a beautiful sunny day (rare this year in Manitoba). National Team athlete Charlotte MacEachern was the maid of honor. There were many athletes invited to the wedding with a number of weightlifters, track & field athletes (old and new) out for the festivities. Everyone enjoyed the prime rib dinner, the fancy "weightlifting" wedding cake and the 90 minute black out during dinner (transformer blew up down the road that left us without power for 90 minutes....didn't put a dent in the evening at all).

Submitted by Rafal Korkowski/ Team Canada and Tanna Payne - both representing the Hercules Weightlifting Club: who said weightlifting has to be all about hard work and competitive spirit? What would happen if we throw a little bit of romance into the pot? Well, on June 13, at the National Championships in Valleyfield, I seized the moment and surprised the weightlifting community by proposing to my girlfriend and teammate Tanna Payne in front of a filled banquet hall at the awards dinner. To the sounds of cheers and claps all around, Tanna said "Of course!" and brought a permanent smile to my face. We anticipate the wedding to be in August 2006, a little ways down the road, but perfect for the both of us, as we have a ton of plans to carry out before then!

Well, summer is now over and a new competitive season begins. It will be a busy one, as day by day another deadline, or end of some qualifying period approaches. Tanna and I will be visiting BC for this upcoming season, a promise I was forced to keep for allowing her to put up with Winnipeg weather! However the plans to represent the Hercules Team and the Manitoba Weightlifting Association remain the same, and I will be back frequently, competing among my teammates and friends. I will unfortunately not be traveling with the team to the Twin City Open competition again this year, but I wish the team all the best. It is a great competition to kick the season off to, and my experiences with it in the past have been nothing but positive. Keep training hard everyone!

Hercules gym shorts: this past summer, the Hercules Weightlifting Club continued its promotional efforts by investigating the production of lifting shorts for its' active members. In September the shorts arrived, and have been very popular amongst the athletes. Special thanks go out to Jon Astolfi who was in charge of the production and design, and to Power Firm for contributing some of the necessary funds.

2004 Challenge of Hercules Club Competition, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, September 11, 2004
On September 11, 2004, 5 lifters from the Hercules Weightlifting Club took part in the season opening, club competition "2004 Challenge of Hercules". After the summer break, each athlete was eager to step back onto the platform and once again reach for the personal improvement. The competition also served as a preparatory contest before heading down to Minnesota, USA for the annual Twin Cities/Glencoe Championship. Below are some highlights from the event.

BC Senior Provincial Championships, Surrey, BC, November 6, 2004
Currently residing in Nanaimo Rafal lifted as a guest lifter at the BC Senior Provincial Championships. Rafal's performance once again indicates solid preparation for the upcoming weightlifting season. All three attempts in the snatch were rather on the light side, with the clean & jerk being more aggressive. After a solid 187.5 kg clean Rafal missed the jerk with his right elbow buckling.
Rafal's next competition is on December 18, 2004 here in Winnipeg.

OFFICIALS TIPS: by Joe Landreville

Preface
This portion of the newsletter is dedicated to the communication, education, and interpretation of the rules that govern Olympic Weightlifting. Technical rules are based on the current International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) 2001-2004 Handbook.

Officials Tip#12
Placing the bar on the chest before turning the elbows: this usually occurs when an athlete has failed to pull and rack the bar high enough on the chest. If athlete moves the bar up the chest after making initial contact, then it is "no lift".

Officials Tip#13
Touching the thighs or the knees with the elbow or the upper arms: this usually occurs when an athlete uncontrollably racks the bar in a low bottom position. If one elbow touches, the center and one of the side referees should catch this and immediately press the red light or raise their arm. Two referees entering the same decision will end the lift. If the referee is not sure if there was an elbow touch or not, the benefit of the doubt goes to the athlete and the lift goes on.
